Saturday 18 July

Todays ride is from Cape Lookout State Park to the South end of Lincoln City. When I got up, the campground was full of fog.

Just as I was getting ready to leave the sun tried to burn through

The ride was a little flat to a slight downhill for the first .2 miles then uphill for the next 2.5 miles

Once over the top of the hill another great view

Then down the other side. About 1.5 miles down the hill I came across another cyclist that had just crashed. He was lying on the side of the road with his bike beside him. He was very dazed and did not know what had happened.  I called 911 and flagged down a couple of motorists. One of the motorists brought over a blanket for Jerry.  I'm not sure how long it took for the first emergency personal to show up but it seemed very fast. Then more help, then more, then the ambulance arrived. As of this writing, I talked to Jerry's son Bruce and found out Jerry had broken rib, collapsed lung, cracked skull and lots of gravel rash. Jerry's helmet saved his life.  It was broken into at least two pieces.

After I helped load Jerry's bike and trailer into one of the emergency vehicles and the ambulance left the scene I headed down the road. I was thinking about the bike wreck and not paying attention to where I was going. The next thing I knew I was at an intersection way off course. Turn around and go back 4.5 miles to turn on the street I should have been on.  Oh well, just a 9 mile detour.

As the route approached Lincoln City the route followed the old Hwy 101.  A very scenic ride up a windy road uphill for a couple of miles.

a single lane bridge over a ravine

once over the top a not so fun ride downhill.  Going from bright sun to dark shade over pavement that had lots of potholes. I reached the town of Otis.  Had a little over a mile to get to Hwy 101.  There was stop n go traffic the whole way. I got to the outskirts of Lincoln City before most of those people.

  2. Butch Bryant - Holy crap, Bob! I can see why you made a wrong turn. You were probably running all kinds of wreck scenarios through your head. Jerry's a lucky man! Let's hope you stay luckier! Don't hesitate to use that "Panic" button on your app. And PLEASE be careful!

  3. Tom Seino - Bob,
Be careful out there. Please, no train wrecks. Prefer you be in one piece for bowling when I visit the ole pueblo in November.
I sent a birthday greeting to Mel in Alabama. She wasn't aware of your blog so I sent her the link. Hope that be OK.
Awesome bike ride so far. WA and OR is rather scenic. Now I know why many people move there. I suppose you're nearly thru OR. CA is gonna be the long one.
Safe travels my friend. Say Aloha to Big Foot.
